Understanding how the web browser works.

The main function of a web browser is to display the web pages. But, web browsers also perform other functions as well. These functions are like sending and receiving email, downloading and uploading of files etc. All these functions are possible because of the communications the web browser is able to establish between itself and the various servers located in the internet world.

The servers are basically repositories of files. The basic web server such as the IIS or the Apache stores web pages in html format. The FTP server stores various types of files such as the PDF files, image files, sound files etc.The SMTP server (email server) stores the various email files that the users send every day.

The communication between the various servers and the web browser takes place over several high level protocols. The main high level protocol used over the internet is the TCP/IP. This basically consists of two important protocols - the TCP and the IP. The TCP is connection based protocol whereas the IP is connectionless protocol. These protocols converts data into packets and delivers the data from the source to the destination depending upon the IP address.

Besides these the subsidiary protocols in the TCP/IP suit are the HTTP, FTP, POP3 and SMTP protocols. The transfer of html files takes place over the HTTP protocol and the files can be read in the browser. The transfer of physical files such as the PDF, image and sound files, takes place over the FTP protocol, whereas, the transfer of the emails takes place over the SMTP and POP3 protocols. The SMTP protocol is used to send emails, whereas, the POP3 protocol is used to receive and retrieve the emails.

The TCP/IP protocol is installed on the windows XP and windows Vista operating system by default. It cannot be uninstalled from windows xp but it can be reset by the netsh reset command from the Dos command line and it can be resorted back to its original configuration.

The TCP/IP protocol needs some parameters in order to function and it can be configured with these parameters either through the command line or through the Dialog boxes. The Windows Xp TCP/IP dialog box gives the manual and the automatic ways of configuring the TCP/IP protocol. In the manual mode it is for the user to enter the ip address, subnet mask etc. In the automatic mode the TCP/IP protocol obtains this information from the DNS server over the DNS protocol. The DNS server address can also be made to be obtained either automatically or by entering it manually.

Once the TCP/IP configuration is completed the internet browser can make use of the TCP/IP protocol to carry out the Internet functions.
